  • Mainframe modernization instead of migration "away from the mainframe"
  • LBBW records initial project successes
  • Provision of qualified specialists thanks to a large partner network

SEITCO QWICS Solutions GmbH (SQ Solutions) from Frankfurt am Main supports the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) with expert know-how for everything to do with the operation and modernization of the existing mainframe landscape. In April 2021, the starting signal was given for the preliminary analysis of mainframe operation. Since then, the young fintech company has been supporting LBBW with a complete package of consulting services and specific measures for practical implementation. SQ Solutions scores with a harmonious combination of many years of experience with mainframe computers, scientifically sound consulting skills and in-depth practical know-how with regard to future technologies.

The starting point of the project was a comprehensive preliminary study. Their goal was to identify acute fields of action for the realignment and modernization of the mainframe platform including the associated applications. Only three months later, the consultants from SQ Solutions identified and prioritized measures in close cooperation with the customer in order to achieve the set goals such as future viability, efficiency and significant cost savings. As part of a holistic approach, the team developed technical modernizations and proposals for organizational changes. In addition, training concepts for the training of new specialists were developed.

The preliminary study has shown that a modern mainframe platform can retain the existing advantages while reducing costs and optimizing them at the same time. One challenge here is the complexity of the mainframe application landscape, which has grown over decades, and the availability of qualified experts. SQ Solutions relies on its large partner network. This makes it possible to find the right specialists for customers and every conceivable challenge. The implementation phase of the project started in September 2021, the first part of which should be completed by the end of 2022.

Increase performance on the mainframe and reduce costs

Numerous experts from SQ Solutions are involved in the project with LBBW to update the mainframe platform, including the two founders Philipp Brune and Dennis Seifert. "We've managed to sort of square the circle here: the first project results show how targeted conversions from COBOL to Java on the mainframe can achieve sustained cost reductions, increased performance and a future-proof software architecture at the same time. In this way, LBBW can enjoy all the advantages of the mainframe and at the same time gradually achieve platform independence for its applications,” says Philipp Brune happily.

And Daniela Rabius, project manager and experienced manager at LBBW, adds: “With SQ Solutions we have a competent partner who supports us in important strategic decisions regarding the orientation of our mainframe platform. Thanks to the professional team, the first important project successes have already been achieved, so we are looking forward to the coming months."
